Mark Mathers, a 33-year-old father of three, tragically lost his life in an accident in 2018 while working at a car dealership and garage in Aberdeen. He was an experienced mechanic, and during a repair on an industrial door, his hoodie became entangled in a recoiling spring. This caused his clothing to tighten around his neck and body, leading to unconsciousness. Despite being rushed to the hospital, he was declared dead three days later.
His employer, Patrick Forman Industrial Doors, was fined £165,000 for breaching health and safety guidelines. The court found that the company failed to implement and maintain a safe system of work, which could have prevented the accident.
