Andrew McAuley, a 64-year-old worker from Runcorn, experienced a severe workplace accident in June 2022 while employed at William Stobart & Son Limited’s warehouse in Appleton Thorn. During the incident, he was picking orders near a forklift truck that was loading pallets of slate tiles. The forklift was carrying two pallets, one on top of the other, and the top pallet was not secured. When the driver turned the vehicle, the pallets detached, and the upper one struck McAuley, crushing his legs.
As a result, McAuley had to have both legs amputated below the knee. He now relies on a wheelchair and has had to make extensive adaptations to his home. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) investigation revealed that the company failed to ensure a safe system of work, leading to the accident. Consequently, William Stobart & Son Limited was fined £160,000 for breaching health and safety regulations.
