Worker Killed in Wall Collapse at University of Bristol Site

A man has tragically died after a wall collapsed while he was working near the University of Bristol’s halls of residence in Stoke Bishop. The incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon, prompting an urgent response from emergency services.

Emergency Services Respond to Fatal Incident

Avon and Somerset Police, alongside the South Western Ambulance Service, were called to Parrys Lane at approximately 12:50 pm on September 4. Despite the swift arrival of paramedics, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

A police spokesperson confirmed the death, stating: “Officers are investigating the death of a man in Parrys Lane, in Stoke Bishop, after receiving a call from the ambulance service. His next of kin are aware, and our thoughts are with them at this extremely difficult time.”

University of Bristol and HSE Involved in Investigation

The collapsed wall, believed to have been part of the perimeter of the university’s student accommodation, has raised concerns about the safety of the structure. In response, the University of Bristol has issued a statement expressing their condolences to those affected. A university spokesperson said, “Our thoughts are with all those affected by the tragic incident that took place yesterday. We are liaising with the relevant authorities.”

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is also involved in the investigation. A spokesperson for the HSE confirmed that they are assisting Avon and Somerset Police in their inquiries, stating: “We are aware of this incident and are working closely with the police to investigate the circumstances.”

Area Secured Following Collapse

Following the collapse, the area has been cordoned off, and metal fencing now surrounds the site. Photographs taken at the scene show a large pile of rubble where the wall once stood, with bricks and debris scattered across the pavement. Authorities are continuing their investigation to determine the cause of the collapse and whether any further risks are present.

Further updates are expected as the investigation progresses.
